Here at 3D Rapid Print, one of the fastest growing 3D Printing companies in the Thames Valley, we like to keep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.

On November 10th 2022, ICON of Austin, Texas and Lennar of Miami, Florida announced that construction was underway on what they claimed was the largest ever community of 3D printed houses. (ICON is a construction technologies company, Lennar is a home construction company; they first unveiled the project in late October 2021.) Known as Wolf Ranch, the 100-home community is situated in the city of Georgetown, north of Austin. Each house was co-designed by architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group.

The community offers 8 floorplans with 24 unique elevations, ranging from 1,574-2,112 square feet (146.2-196.2 square metres) of living space. Each house is intended to have 3-4 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms. In addition, they are all designed to be powered via rooftop solar panels and feature a video doorbell, a smart Wi-Fi controlled deadbolt and a similarly controlled thermostat, as well as Wolf Ranch’s own security package. ICON co-founder and CEO Jason Ballard hopes that the project will pave the way for robots and drones to eventually build entire neighbourhoods, towns and cities. Reservations for Wolf Ranch are intended to begin somewhen in 2023, with prices expected to start from the mid-$400,000s.

Another recent example of 3D printing’s use in construction involves 3D printing construction company COBOD of Copenhagen, Denmark. (COBOD is short for construction of buildings on demand.) In late October 2022, it spoke of what it claimed was Borneo’s first 3D printed house. It was unveiled by concrete pre-casting company Sarawak Consolidated Industries Berhad of Malaysia, had a footprint of 1000 square feet (92.9 square metres), a total printing time of 46 hours and was made using COBOD’s flagship BOD2 3D printer.
