Inspired by how trees absorb and evaporate water, it was created by <a href=\"https:\/\/jiamingliu.design\/\">Jiaming Liu<\/a> as his master\u2019s graduation project at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folkwang-uni.de\/en\/home\/\">Folkwang University of the Arts<\/a> in Essen, Germany. (This evaporation process was also used by Israeli designer Yael Issacharov when she created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90793729\/this-ancient-ac-system-will-cool-your-house-without-electricity\">terracotta air conditioning system<\/a> that similarly uses no external power.)<\/p>\n<p>At the base of the humidifier is a storage container that is glazed on the outside, so that it can hold up to half a litre of water without wetting what the humidifier is placed on. However, the humidifier\u2019s roots and upper trunk are not glazed, as they need direct contact with the water and the air to work. They absorb the water in the container through the pores in the clay, such that as the water rises and saturates the clay it evaporates, increasing the room\u2019s humidity. After trying many different designs for the humidifier\u2019s structure, Liu discovered that an accordion-like shape worked best, as its ridges gave a larger contact surface area with the air in the most compact footprint.<\/p>\n<p>Liu made the previous version of the humidifier out of concrete before he experimented with using 3D printing and recycled materials. He discovered that a combination of clay and ceramic that used one third recycled ceramic powder made the structure stronger while increasing its water absorbing abilities. Liu stated that he is happy to bring his design to market if any companies are interested in making it at scale.
