The team hopes to compete in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americansolarchallenge.org\/\">American Solar Challenge<\/a>, which would involve racing circa 2,000 miles (3,219km) across the country against other university teams. Their next goal is to race in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldsolarchallenge.org\/\">Bridgestone World Solar Challenge<\/a>, which would entail racing circa 3,000km (1,864 miles) through the Australian outback. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniformitylabs.com\/news.html#news9\">In<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2021\/09\/22\/2301403\/0\/en\/Uniformity-Labs-Ultra-Low-Porosity-AlSi10Mg-Aluminum-Alloy-Powder-Delivers-Greatly-Increased-Throughput-with-Best-in-Class-Material-Properties.html\">September 2021<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniformitylabs.com\/\">Uniformity Labs<\/a> of Fremont, California announced that it had 3D printed a roll-cage designed for a solar powered race car that would also be competing in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hypernovasolar.org\/\">Hypernova Solar<\/a> project was founded in 2019 and today has 50 members including Mason freshmen and seniors, as well as a few students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvcc.edu\/\">Northern Virginia Community College<\/a> and local secondary schools. The team intend to have Hypernova One be a proof-of-concept car to serve as inspiration for building a second, improved car for competition. In addition, they are developing their own 3D printer that can print onto a conveyor belt at a 45-degree angle to enable them to print along an unlimited axis.<\/p>\n<p>Other examples of 3D printing\u2019s involvement with solar powered cars include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimanex.com\/\">DiManEx<\/a> of Utrecht, the Netherlands. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimanex.com\/2019\/07\/22\/dimanex-supplies-more-than-60-3d-printed-parts-for-the-lightyear-ones-interior\/\">In July 2019<\/a>, it announced a collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/lightyear.one\/\">Lightyear<\/a> of Helmond, who are the producers of what DiManEx proclaimed as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimanex.com\/2019\/07\/22\/dimanex-supplies-more-than-60-3d-printed-parts-for-the-lightyear-ones-interior\/\">the world\u2019s first long-range solar car<\/a>.\u201d (Helmond is also in the Netherlands.) Unveiled in June 2019, The Lightyear One was a 5-passenger prototype car that DiManEx boasted was furnished with more than 60 3D printed parts made via DiManEx\u2019s digital supply platform. As of December 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/lightyear.one\/press-releases\/lightyear-and-leaseplan-sign-agreement-for-5000-solar-electric-vehicles\">Lightyear aims to start production on its first units somewhen in 2022<\/a>. The concept of 3D printed solar powered cars traces back at least as far as <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201204234341\/https:\/media.ntu.edu.sg\/NewsReleases\/Pages\/newsdetail.aspx?news=7c8f836b-4ad9-45fd-8bcc-cad3d0a787b1\">February 2015<\/a>, where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntu.edu.sg\/\">Nanyang Technological University<\/a> of Singapore unveiled a solar powered car with a 3D printed body shell comprising 150 different parts.<\/p>\n<p>3D printing is an amazing tool.
