Their work took inspiration from how cephalopods like cuttlefish, octopuses and squids can change their skin colour to camouflage themselves and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acsami.0c17623\">their research<\/a> was published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/journal\/aamick\">ACS Applied Materials &amp; Interfaces<\/a>. They hope that their work will lead to new forms of military camouflage, robotics and electronic displays<em>.<\/p>\n<p><\/em>One material was a water-absorbent gel, which when combined with a special light-sensing material, made an artificial muscle that could contract in response to changes in light. The other material was a stretchy substance that could reveal colours in response to light changes. Combining this with the light-sensitive gel enabled the researchers to replicate the camouflage effect. For further work, the team intends to improve the material\u2019s sensitivity, response time and durability.<\/p>\n<p>Other examples of novel 3D printable materials have been created by researchers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard University<\/a> of Cambridge, Massachusetts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rice.edu\/\">Rice University<\/a> of Houston, Texas. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seas.harvard.edu\/news\/2020\/09\/wool-material-can-remember-and-change-shape\">In September 2020<\/a>, researchers at Harvard University unveiled a 3D printable wool-like material that could <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ngmQwnR79Fs\">remember and change its shape in response to certain stimuli<\/a>, which they hoped would help wider efforts of reducing waste in the fashion industry. With Rice University, researchers unveiled a <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/smll.201904747\">3D printable lightweight, load-bearing and bullet resistant material<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.rice.edu\/2019\/11\/13\/theoretical-tubulanes-inspire-ultrahard-polymers\/\">in November 2019<\/a>, proclaiming that it marked the next step towards the holy grail of material science.<\/p>\n<p>3D printing is an amazing tool.
