{"id":1467,"date":"2020-05-07T13:13:53","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T12:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/?p=1467"},"modified":"2021-02-17T19:03:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T19:03:00","slug":"the-3d-printed-microscopic-fish-that-do-more-than-just-swim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/05\/07\/the-3d-printed-microscopic-fish-that-do-more-than-just-swim\/","title":{"rendered":"The 3D Printed Microscopic Fish That Do More Than Just Swim"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here at 3D Rapid Print, one of the fastest growing 3D Printing companies in the Thames Valley, we like to keep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/these_microscopic_fish_are_3d_printed_to_do_more_than_swim\">On August 25th 2015<\/a>, nanoengineers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ucsd.edu\/\">University Of California, San Diego<\/a> (UCSD) unveiled their 3D printed so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/these_microscopic_fish_are_3d_printed_to_do_more_than_swim\">microfish<\/a>,\u201d which could be controlled via chemical reactions and steered via magnetism when in a special solution containing hydrogen peroxide. <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/adma.201501372\">Their work was published in the journal Advanced Materials<\/a>. When platinum nanoparticles were incorporated into the microfishes\u2019 tails, they reacted with the hydrogen peroxide to propel the microfish forward. Similarly, magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles incorporated into the microfishes\u2019 heads enabled them to be steered with magnets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of their work, the researchers incorporated nanoparticles of polydiacetylene (PDA) into the microfishes\u2019 bodies, a chemical that captures harmful pore-forming toxins like those found in bee venom. It was found that what UCSD referred to as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/these_microscopic_fish_are_3d_printed_to_do_more_than_swim\">the powerful swimming of the microfish in solution<\/a>\u201d significantly improved their ability to clean up toxins. The PDA nanoparticles became fluorescent and emitted red light upon binding with the toxin molecules, allowing the team to monitor the microfishes\u2019 detoxification ability via the intensity of their red glow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The microfish were made via a method that took inspiration from a 3D printing technology called microscale continuous optical printing (\u03bcCOP), which was developed in the laboratory of one of the lead researchers. USCD proclaimed that this enabled the researchers to 3D print an array of hundreds of microfish in a matter of seconds, with each one measuring 120\u03bcm in length and 30\u03bcm in thickness. The \u03bcCOP technology uses a so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/these_microscopic_fish_are_3d_printed_to_do_more_than_swim\">digital micromirror array device (DMD) chip<\/a>\u201d that projects a controlled pattern of ultraviolet light onto a photosensitive material that solidifies upon illumination. This enables sets of functional nanoparticles to be incorporated into specific parts of the microfishes\u2019 bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>USCD proclaims that \u03bcCOP does not require the use of any harsh chemicals, and would allow the researchers to easily experiment with different designs of 3D printable microfish, such as shark and manta ray shapes. The researchers hope that their microfish would inspire a new generation of so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/pressrelease\/these_microscopic_fish_are_3d_printed_to_do_more_than_swim\">smart microrobots<\/a>\u201d that could sense and remove toxins, and could engage in directed drug delivery.
