{"id":1447,"date":"2020-04-03T15:52:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-03T14:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/?p=1447"},"modified":"2021-02-17T19:03:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T19:03:00","slug":"3d-printing-vs-motorbikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/04\/03\/3d-printing-vs-motorbikes\/","title":{"rendered":"3D Printing Vs Motorbikes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here at 3D Rapid Print, one of the fastest growing 3D Printing companies in the Thames Valley, we like to keep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2002, David S\u00e1nchez of motorsport engineering company <a href=\"https:\/\/bottpower.com\/\">Bottpower<\/a> of Valencia, Spain started a project to make a high-performance superbike for track racing that would also be road legal, with a 1000cc engine and what S\u00e1nchez describes as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bottpower.com\/morlaco-reloaded\/\">high level components<\/a>.\u201d Collaborating with a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bottpower.com\/morlaco-reloaded\/\">designer<\/a>\u201d named Hugo van Waaijen, this was named the <a href=\"https:\/\/bottpower.com\/bott-1000-morlaco\/\">BOTT 1000 Morlaco<\/a>. However, due to commitments to more important things, renders of its first proper design wouldn\u2019t be published until <a href=\"https:\/\/bottpower.com\/morlaco-reloaded\/\">February 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanchez argues that he turned to 3D printing to make part of the bike as he wanted to build it with as advanced technology as he could. <a href=\"https:\/\/bottpower.com\/bott-1000-morlaco-fuel-tank-details\/\">In December 2019<\/a>, S\u00e1nchez spoke of how the bike\u2019s fuel tank was 3D printed with the help of 3D printing specialists <a href=\"https:\/\/optimus3d.es\/en\/\">Optimus 3D<\/a> of \u00c1lava, also of Spain. What S\u00e1nchez referred to as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bottpower.com\/bott-1000-morlaco-fuel-tank-details\/\">the outer carcass<\/a>\u201d of the fuel tank was 3D printed to save on the time and money necessary to make any molds for it. It was ultimately 3D printed in 5 separate pieces that were glued together to save more money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/te-3d-printed-motorcycle\/37729\/\">The concept of 3D printed motorbikes traces at last as far back as May 2015<\/a>, where technology company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.te.com\/usa-en\/home.html\">TE Connectivity<\/a> of Schaffhausen, Switzerland unveiled one at the 3D printing conference known only as <a href=\"https:\/\/rapid3devent.com\/\">Rapid<\/a>. A more recent example happened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.automationworld.com\/factory\/3d-printing-additive-manufacturing\/article\/21112293\/additive-manufacturing-expertise-brings-stunning-electric-motorcycle-to-market\">in late January 2020<\/a>, where motorcycle manufacturers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtissmotorcycles.com\/\">The Curtiss Motorcycle Company<\/a> of Leeds, Alabama, and 3D Printing company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastradius.com\/\">Fast Radius<\/a> of Chicago, Illinois unveiled the Zeus 8, a 3D printed electric motorbike that is due to hit the market some time in 2020. However, this would not be the first of its kind, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/bigrep.com\/nowlab\/\">Nowlab<\/a> of 3D printing company <a href=\"https:\/\/bigrep.com\/\">BigRep<\/a> of Berlin unveiled a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2018\/11\/26\/bigrep-3d-printed-motorbike-nera\/\">design study of a motorbike the was entirely 3D printed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/nera-3d-printed-electric-motorcycle\/57317\/\">outside of its electrical components in November 2018<\/a>, with it being declared a world first at the time. (Nowlab is the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bigrep.com\/nowlab\/\">innovation lab and consultancy of BigRep<\/a>.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bottpower.com\/the-morlaco-project-keeps-moving-forward\/\">Bottpower\u2019s most recent (as of April 3rd 2020) blog post on the bike<\/a> states that similarly to the fuel tank, other parts of the bike were 3D printed in several pieces and glued together, before being sanded and painted as necessary. At the time, the next step was to reinforce the parts\u2019 structures with carbon fibre. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorcyclenews.com\/news\/new-tech\/3d-printed-motorbike\/\">The bike is due to be finished in summer 2020<\/a>. Given that S\u00e1nchez started the project 18 years ago, it can only be hoped that the long wait will be worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is an amazing tool.
