{"id":1423,"date":"2020-02-28T12:43:48","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T12:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/?p=1423"},"modified":"2021-02-17T19:03:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T19:03:00","slug":"new-way-to-3d-print-with-copper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/02\/28\/new-way-to-3d-print-with-copper\/","title":{"rendered":"New Way To 3D Print With Copper"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here at 3D Rapid Print, one\nof the fastest growing 3D Printing companies in the Thames Valley, we like to\nkeep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/press-releases\/markforged-launches-copper-3d-printing\/\">On\nFebruary 13th 2020<\/a>, self-appointed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/press-releases\/markforged-launches-copper-3d-printing\/\">leading\nmanufacturer of metal and carbon fiber 3D printers<\/a>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/\">Markforged<\/a> of Watertown, Massachusetts\nannounced the <a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/blog\/3d-printed-copper\/\">release<\/a>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/static.markforged.com\/downloads\/copper-data-sheet.pdf\">of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Co_0uLPc1q8\">pure<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UdiwBiw5dyo\">copper<\/a> for its <a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/metal-x\/\">Metal X<\/a> 3D printer, describing it as\n\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/press-releases\/markforged-launches-copper-3d-printing\/\">the\nonly reliable, affordable, and safe way to 3D print the widely used material<\/a>.\u201d\nMarkforged founder and CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/author\/greg-mark\/\">Greg\nMark<\/a> argues that copper is expensive and difficult to machine, and that\npure copper cannot be 3D printed with via conventional means. (This would be\nwith powdered copper and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/engineering-technology\/manupedia\/selective-laser-melting-slm\">selective\nlaser melting<\/a>.) This is due to its high thermal conductivity, meaning that it\nreflects the energy from the lasers used to 3D print with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/edgarsten\/2020\/02\/13\/copper-3d-printing-breakthrough-could-cut-costs-boost-ev-power\/#644ef81f70f9\">Markforged\nfound a way around the problem by changing how to configure and heat the powdered\ncopper<\/a>. Instead of using selective laser melting, the object can be 3D\nprinted out of powdered copper wrapped in plastic via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/engineering-technology\/manupedia\/fused-deposition-modelling-fdm\">fused\ndeposition modelling<\/a>, melting the plastic and not the copper. This can then\nbe burned in a furnace to get rid of the plastic and sinter the copper\ntogether. (The word sinter can be defined as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/sinter\">to cause to become a\ncoherent mass by heating without melting<\/a>.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark argues that automakers should particularly avail themselves of the new\ntechnology, citing the example of 3D printing copper welding shanks used to\nspot weld vehicle body parts. (The term spot welding can be defined as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/spot%20welding\">Welding of overlapping\npieces of metal at small points by application of great pressure and electric\ncurrent<\/a>.\u201d) He claims that most large auto manufacturing plants might stock\nup to $1 million in spare shanks bought from outside suppliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Markforged\u2019s customers partnered with them to do some welding tests\nwith Markforged\u2019s 3D printed copper. (For reasons unknown the mystery customer\nwasn\u2019t named, and only referred to as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/press-releases\/markforged-launches-copper-3d-printing\/\">a\nwell-known automotive manufacturer<\/a>.\u201d) Thousands of welds later, it was concluded\nthe copper welds had the same \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/markforged.com\/press-releases\/markforged-launches-copper-3d-printing\/\">resistance<\/a>\u201d\nas conventionally made spot-welding shanks. (Markforged\u2019s press release did not\nproperly define its use of the word \u201cresistance.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the mystery customer proclaimed that Markforged\u2019s 3D printing\ntechnology had led to a 12-fold reduction in part lead times and a 6-fold\nreduction in part costs; they also intend to extend their use of 3D printed\nparts to the production line. (The term lead time can be defined as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/lead%20time\">The amount of time between the\ninitiation of some process and its completion, e.g. the time required to\nmanufacture or procure a product; the time required before something can be\nprovided or delivered<\/a>.\u201d) Their maintenance manager declared that they\nexpect to save $200,000 a year on inventory costs by using just 1 Metal X\nsystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is an amazing\ntool.
