EPFL proclaimed that the process had potential in\na wide range of fields, including 3D bioprinting; making soft objects like biological\ntissue, organs, hearing aids and mouthguards; or even interior design. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-14630-4\">Their work was published in the\njournal Nature<\/a> Communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/31xHZvUP1Ls\">To 3D print an object this way<\/a>, a\nvolume of light-sensitive resin is illuminated with a series of laser patterns\nthat project the object at different rotational perspectives, which is\nsynchronised to the volume of resin being rotated. <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2020\/02\/a-new-spin-on-3d-printing-can-produce-an-object-in-seconds\/?comments=1\">This\ntakes inspiration from the principle of tomography<\/a>, a method mainly used in\nmedical imaging to build a model of an object based on scans of its surface. In\naddition to the team\u2019s method being able to print the object within 30 seconds,\nit is suspended within the volume of resin, ergo there is no need for\nadditional support structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nsystem is currently capable of making structures measuring up to 2cm with a\nprecision of 0.08mm, although the team hopes to develop their system to build\nobjects of up to 15cm. They have also established a spin-off company to develop\nand market the system called <a href=\"https:\/\/readily3d.com\/\">Readily3D<\/a>. Self-proclaimed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gizmodo.co.uk\/2012\/12\/about-us\/\">isn\u2019t your average tech site<\/a>\u201d Gizmodo UK argued that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gizmodo.co.uk\/2020\/02\/3d-printers-are-finally-starting-to-work-more-like-star-treks-replicators\/\">the technology constituted a\nfurther step towards 3D printers becoming increasingly like replicators from\nthe Star Trek franchise<\/a>, although these were mainly used to synthesise food and drink on\ndemand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is an amazing tool.
