{"id":1415,"date":"2020-02-18T12:07:34","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T12:07:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/?p=1415"},"modified":"2021-02-17T19:03:19","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T19:03:19","slug":"the-3d-printing-resin-made-from-cooking-oil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/index.php\/2020\/02\/18\/the-3d-printing-resin-made-from-cooking-oil\/","title":{"rendered":"The 3D Printing Resin Made From Waste Cooking Oil"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here at 3D Rapid Print, one\nof the fastest growing 3D Printing companies in the Thames Valley, we like to\nkeep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/utsc.utoronto.ca\/news-events\/breaking-research\/researchers-turn-waste-cooking-oil-mcdonalds-high-end-3d-printing-resin\">On\nJanuary 30th 2020<\/a>, a group of researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsc.utoronto.ca\/\">University Of Toronto Scarborough<\/a> in\nCanada lead by chemistry professor <a href=\"https:\/\/utsc.utoronto.ca\/physsci\/andre-simpson\">Andre Simpson<\/a> announced\nthat they had made a biodegradable 3D printing resin from waste cooking oil. Simpson\nbecame interested in the idea when he first got a 3D printer circa early 2017\nand discovered that the molecules used in commercial resins were similar to\nfats found in cooking oils. From a litre of cooking oil, Simpson\u2019s team were\nable to make 420ml of resin, which was used to 3D print a plastic model of a\nbutterfly. The University proclaimed that this showed features down to a tenth\nof a millimetre and wouldn\u2019t crumble or melt above room temperature. Their\nresults were published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acssuschemeng.9b06281\">ACS\nSustainable Chemistry &amp; Engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University\u2019s press release described used cooking oil as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/utsc.utoronto.ca\/news-events\/breaking-research\/researchers-turn-waste-cooking-oil-mcdonalds-high-end-3d-printing-resin\">major\nglobal environmental problem<\/a>,\u201d arguing that commercial and household waste causes\nproblems like blocked sewage pipes via the build-up of fats. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sustainable-management-food\/industrial-uses-wasted-food#fog\">commercial\nuses for waste cooking oil do exist<\/a>, Simpson claims that there are not\nenough ways to recycle it into high value commodities like 3D printing resin.\nHe argues that this could remove some of the financial barriers inherent to recycling\nwaste cooking oil, as many restaurants need to pay to dispose of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University claims that conventional high-resolution resins can cost\nupwards of US$525 a litre, as they\u2019re derived from fossil fuel oils and significantly\nless simple to make than the resin Simpson\u2019s team made. Only one of the\nchemicals used in their resin is not recyclable, ergo it could be made for as\nlow as US$300 per tonne, making it cheaper than most plastics. In addition, it\nwas found that after burying a 3D printed object made with their resin in soil,\nit lost a fifth of its weight in about two weeks, making objects made with\nresin biodegradable. Self-proclaimed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gizmodo.co.uk\/2012\/12\/about-us\/\">isn\u2019t your average tech site<\/a>\u201d\nGizmodo UK argued that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gizmodo.co.uk\/2020\/02\/scientists-turned-mcdonalds-fryer-oil-into-plastic-resin-for-3d-printed-models-that-probably-smell-amazing\/\">although\nrecycling waste cooking oil could result in some side business for fast-food\nchains, it would give them more reason to push their fried foods on people who\nshould be eating less of them<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is an amazing\ntool.
