It was based on tubulanes, a still mostly\ntheoretical material structure based on cross-linked carbon nanotubes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/000926149380059X#!\">whose\nexistence was first predicted in 1993<\/a>. Rice\nUniversity argues that while tubulanes themselves haven\u2019t been made before,\ntheir 3D printed polymer variants may be the next best thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rice team discovered that tubulanes could be mimicked as scaled-up,\n3D-printed polymer blocks filled with air pockets, which were compared against\nsolid blocks of the same material. Both were subjected to crushing forces and\nhad projectiles fired into them at speeds of circa 13,000 mph! While being\nsubjected to crushing forces, the tubulane mimicking blocks collapsed in on\nthemselves without cracking; they also resisted projectile impacts up to 10\ntimes better than the solid blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-authors Peter Boul and Carl Thaemlitz of Aramco Services Co. claim that the\noil and gas industry will find tubulane structures particularly useful,\nespecially for building oil wells, as such materials must withstand impacts that\nwould <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rubblization\">rubblize<\/a>\nstandard cement. (Aramco Services Co. sponsored the research and is most likely\nan American-based subsidiary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saudiaramco.com\/\">Saudi\nAramco<\/a>, the petroleum and natural gas company of the Saudi Arabian\ngovernment. The reader will have to decide if \u201crubblize\u201d is an actual word; this\nblog post only links to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia\">Wikipedia<\/a>\u2019s\narticle on \u201crubblization\u201d as the University\u2019s press release did.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paper\u2019s lead author argues that tubulane-like structures of metals,\nceramics and polymers are only limited by the size of the printer, and that\noptimizing the structure\u2019s lattice design could lead to better materials for\napplications in: aerospace, the automotive industry, biomedicine, civil\nengineering, packaging and sports. The Rice team hope that the discovery will\nlead to 3D printable structures of any size with tunable mechanical properties.<em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is an amazing\ntool.
