{"id":1363,"date":"2019-11-22T12:51:33","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T12:51:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/?p=1363"},"modified":"2021-02-17T19:03:19","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T19:03:19","slug":"tuskegee-university-selected-by-nasa-to-advance-3d-printing-in-aerospace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/11\/22\/tuskegee-university-selected-by-nasa-to-advance-3d-printing-in-aerospace\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuskegee University Selected By NASA To Advance 3D Printing In Aerospace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here at 3D\nRapid Print, we like to keep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-selects-minority-serving-institutions-to-advance-aerospace-manufacturing\">On\nOctober 30th 2019<\/a>, America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\">National\nAeronautics And Space Administration<\/a> (NASA) announced that it would be\nawarding $1.5 million to fund what they described as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-selects-minority-serving-institutions-to-advance-aerospace-manufacturing\/\">curriculum-based\nlearning, research, training, internships, and apprenticeships at three\ninstitutions to meet the growing demand for expertise and techniques in\nhigh-volume aerospace manufacturing<\/a>.\u201d This would be done via NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/offices\/education\/programs\/national\/murep\/home\/index.html\">Minority\nUniversity Research and Education Project<\/a> (MUREP) of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/stem\/about.html\">Office of STEM Engagement<\/a>, as\nwell as their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aeroresearch\/about-armd\">Aeronautics\nResearch Mission Directorate<\/a>. (STEM is short for science technology,\nengineering and Mathematics.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would formed the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-selects-minority-serving-institutions-to-advance-aerospace-manufacturing\/\">The\nMUREP Aerospace High-Volume Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management\nCooperative<\/a>.\u201d (The masses will have to make what they will of these objectively\nweirdly long names.) NASA proclaimed that over the next 2 years, the selected institutions\nwould develop opportunities for their students to learn about the designing and\nbuilding of aerospace parts, as well as managing their supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the selected institutions is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuskegee.edu\/\">Tuskegee\nUniversity<\/a> (TU) of Alabama, who propose collaborating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellflight.com\/\">Bell Flight<\/a> of Fort Worth, Texas, in\norder to accelerate the integration of 3D printing into the replacement of\nhelicopter parts. In addition, they intend to integrate 3D printing into the designing,\nbuilding and testing of drones, which will be done in increments to enable\nbetter assessment of the 3D printed parts. (Bell Flight are self-appointed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellflight.com\/company\/about\">more than aviation experts<\/a>,\u201d\nbut \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellflight.com\/company\/about\">pioneers who have\nchallenged what&#8217;s possible for sound barriers, lunar missions, tiltrotor\nsystems and commercial helicopters<\/a>.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TU project leader Dr. Firas Akasheh argues that in recent years, America\u2019s\naerospace industry has struggled to meet increasing demand for aircraft and\nparts, resulting in all-time-high levels of order backlogs and lost\nopportunities for growth. In addition to everything else, Tuskegee University\nintends to use part of the grant to help their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuskegee.edu\/programs-courses\/colleges-schools\/coe\">College\nof Engineering<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuskegee.edu\/news\/nasa-selects-tuskegee-university-to-help-advance-aerospace-manufacturing\">expand\nits 3D printing facilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other 2 selected institutions are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utep.edu\/\">University\nof Texas at El Paso<\/a> (UTEP) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vsu.edu\/\">Virginia State\nUniversity<\/a> (VSU) of Petersburg, although neither of their projects involve\n3D printing. UTEP aim to collaborate with aerospace and defence company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/index.html\">Lockheed Martin<\/a> of\nBethesda, Maryland, wanting to fix what they see as a shortage of employees in\nAmerica\u2019s aerospace and defence sectors who are skilled in the production of\nprinted circuit boards. Doing something completely different, VSU intends to\nlaunch a pilot programme with Virginia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odu.edu\/\">Old\nDominion University<\/a> of Norfolk to advance the manufacturing of blisks. (Norfolk,\nVirginia is not to be confused with the county in England. The word blisk is\nshort for bladed disk and refers to a combination of a rotor hub and blades\nmade simultaneously from a single material, rather than two separate pieces.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is\nan amazing tool.
