{"id":1352,"date":"2019-11-01T12:27:03","date_gmt":"2019-11-01T12:27:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/?p=1352"},"modified":"2021-02-17T19:03:20","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T19:03:20","slug":"the-3d-printed-electric-autonomous-shuttle-vehicle-mark-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/11\/01\/the-3d-printed-electric-autonomous-shuttle-vehicle-mark-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"The 3D Printed Electric Autonomous Shuttle Vehicle Mark II"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here at 3D\nRapid Print, we like to keep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/08\/31\/come-along-take-a-ride\/\">In late August 2019<\/a>, self-proclaimed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/localmotors.com\/company\/\">ground mobility company focused on shaping the\nfuture for the better<\/a>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/localmotors.com\/\">Local\nMotors<\/a> of Chandler,\nArizona unveiled the upgraded version of its mostly 3D printed electric\nautonomous shuttle <a href=\"https:\/\/launchforth.io\/Subhadra20\/refine-olli-20\/overview\/\">Olli<\/a>, unsurprisingly named Olli 2.0. Olli\n2.0 features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>2 more\nseats than the original,<\/li><li>Programmable\ninterior lighting,<\/li><li>An\nimproved user interface,<\/li><li>Virtual\nand\/or augmented reality passengers can add to the ride,<\/li><li>Screens\nthat can show a pair of eyes,<\/li><li>A PA\nsystem to address pedestrians.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The eyes\nand PA system are done in the hope of making the vehicle more approachable,\ndespite the counterargument that pedestrians would either fail to realise the\neyes are eyes, or would simply find it weird. Local Motors also proclaim that Olli\n2.0 is 80% 3D printed and can travel 100 miles on a single charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms\nof similarities, original Olli and Olli 2.0 have the same overall appearance, the\nsame top speed of 25mph, and Level 4 autonomous capability. This refers to a\ndesignation by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sae.org\">Society of Automotive Engineers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/sae-autonomous-levels-definition-self-driving\/49947\/\">such that the vehicle can handle\nall aspects of driving in<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sae.org\/news\/press-room\/2018\/12\/sae-international-releases-updated-visual-chart-for-its-%E2%80%9Clevels-of-driving-automation%E2%80%9D-standard-for-self-driving-vehicles\">certain conditions without human\nintervention, but can still ask for it if necessary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/3\/8\/18255176\/local-motors-olli-3d-printed-self-driving-shuttle-crash-test-footage\">Crash\ntesting of the Olli was exclusively covered by technology news website The\nVerge in March 2019, despite this only comprising 2 crashes at 3 and 25mph, and\nboth with an empty vehicle<\/a>. Unsurprisingly, the 3mph crash showed no\napparent damage at all, whereas the results of the 25mph crash looked\nobjectively terrifying. Nonetheless, Local Motors\u2019s CEO conveniently proclaimed\nthat they were happy with the results, insisting that the point of the\nexperiment was to test the strength of the vehicle\u2019s 3D printed frame. To be\nfair to Local Motors (but not really), the vehicle\u2019s frame remained mostly\nintact, and their then test vehicles would be driven at 18mph at most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless, Local Motors weirdly used a weaker sort of glass in the crashed\nvehicle to that being used in Ollis being tested on public roads at the time.\nThese used the same sort of laminated glass that is used in car windscreens, which\nis designed not to shatter at all. (Car windows are made of weaker, tempered glass\nin case someone needs to break their way out of the vehicle.) For reasons\nunknown, Local Motors failed to do any test crashes at 18mph, any with crash\ntest dummies, or any with an Olli with laminated glass. If Local Motors have in\nfact done any more test crashes, footage of them has not been released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/localmotors.com\/2017\/06\/21\/661\/\">The\nconcept of the Olli originated from Local Motors\u2019s 2015 Urban Mobility\nChallenge<\/a>, which asked their co-creation community to attempt\nto solve mobility issues affecting the world\u2019s cities. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/alltechconsidered\/2016\/06\/29\/471599187\/a-24-year-old-designed-a-self-driving-minibus-maker-built-it-in-weeks\">The challenge was won by Edgar Sarmiento of Bogota,\nColombia<\/a>, with the first\nOlli being unveiled at the opening of Local Motors\u2019s then new Sales and\nDemonstration facility, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalharbor.com\/\">National\nHarbor<\/a>, Maryland in June 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/localmotors.com\/press-release\/self-driving-shuttle-debuts-in-rancho-cordova-california\/\">On\nAugust 7th 2019, a fleet of Ollis was introduced to the White Rock Corporate\nCampus of Rancho Cordova, California, a business park that houses 1,600 people<\/a>,\nmaking it the most recent such place. <a href=\"https:\/\/localmotors.com\/press-release\/self-driving-shuttle-olli-continues-testing-on-public-roads-in-maryland\/\">As\nof late October 2019, the Olli is also being tested on Maryland\u2019s public roads<\/a>.\nProduction of Olli 2.0 began in July 2019, with deliveries intended for the\nfourth quarter of the same year; production of the original Olli is intended to\nstop within the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is\nan amazing tool.
