{"id":1320,"date":"2019-09-17T11:18:55","date_gmt":"2019-09-17T10:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/?p=1320"},"modified":"2021-02-17T19:03:20","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T19:03:20","slug":"nasa-has-funded-a-demonstration-to-3d-print-spacecraft-parts-low-earth-orbit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/09\/17\/nasa-has-funded-a-demonstration-to-3d-print-spacecraft-parts-low-earth-orbit\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Has Funded A Demonstration To 3D Print Spacecraft Parts Low Earth Orbit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here at 3D\nRapid Print, we like to keep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/nasa-funds-demo-of-3d-printed-spacecraft-parts-made-assembled-in-orbit\">In July 2019<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/madeinspace.us\/\">Made In\nSpace<\/a> of\nMountain View, California received a $73.7 million contract from America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\">National\nAeronautics And Space Administration<\/a> (NASA) to demonstrate how their <a href=\"https:\/\/madeinspace.us\/capabilities-and-technology\/archinaut\/\">Archinaut<\/a> One spacecraft could 3D print spacecraft\nparts while in low-Earth orbit. (Made in space describe their \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/madeinspace.us\/about\/\">Mission<\/a>\u201d as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/madeinspace.us\/about\/\">We develop state-of-the-art space manufacturing technology to support\nexploration, national security, and sustainable space settlement<\/a>;\u201d they describe their \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/madeinspace.us\/about\/\">Vision<\/a>\u201d as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/madeinspace.us\/about\/\">Pioneer sustainable space infrastructure to support our customers\u2019\nmissions, promote national security and drive exploration objectives through\nadvanced space manufacturing.<\/a>\u201d) Unfortunately, NASA does not expect the Archinaut\nto launch until at least 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the Archinaut\nis in position, it will 3D print two beams that will reach 32ft (9.75m) out\nfrom each of its sides. <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DCLD-ilfdUE\">As the beams being printed, they\nwill simultaneously unfurl two arrays of solar panels that are attached to the\nbeams; a robotic arm will subsequently secure the arrays to the beams<\/a>. NASA claimed that the solar\npanel arrays would generate 5 times as much power as traditional solar panels would\non a similar sized spacecraft, also proclaiming that the potential benefits of the\n3D printing in space would include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Enabling\nremote construction of large structures in the vacuum of space, such as communications\nantennae or space telescopes.<\/li><li>Enabling\nsmaller satellites to deploy surface area power systems and reflectors that\nwould otherwise be too small for them.<\/li><li>Eliminating\na spacecraft\u2019s volume being constrained by the available space on a rocket.<\/li><li>Avoiding\nthe risks inherent to spacewalks by doing things astronauts would otherwise\nhave to do.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Made In\nSpace has been working on the Archinaut project since 2016 and it has still not\nyet left the ground. Nonetheless, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/tdm\/irma\/the-geometry-of-success-archinaut-project-conducts-first-large-scale-additive-manufacturing.html\">in August 2017<\/a> they 3D printed some structural\nbeams in a thermal vacuum chamber at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/ames\">NASA\u2019s Ames Research\nCentre<\/a>\nin California\u2019s Silicon Valley. In November 2014, Made In Space became the first\ncompany to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/content\/open-for-business-3-d-printer-creates-first-object-in-space-on-international-space-station\"> 3D print an object in zero\ngravity<\/a>. In\nAugust 2017, they were awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/\">Guinness World Record<\/a> for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/497778-largest-3d-printed-non-assembled-piece\">Longest 3D printed non-assembled\npiece<\/a>\u201d for 3D\nprinting a beam that measured 37.7m (123ft 8.25in) in length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is\nan amazing tool.
