{"id":1261,"date":"2019-08-16T11:36:35","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T10:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/?p=1261"},"modified":"2021-02-17T19:03:20","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T19:03:20","slug":"nasas-3d-printed-habitat-challenge-grand-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/08\/16\/nasas-3d-printed-habitat-challenge-grand-final\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA&#8217;s 3D Printed Habitat Challenge Grand Final"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here at 3D Rapid Print, one\nof the fastest growing 3D Printing companies in the Thames Valley, we like to\nkeep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Circa May\n2015, America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\">National Aeronautics And Space Administration<\/a> (NASA) launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/spacetech\/centennial_challenges\/3DPHab\/index.html\">3D Printed Habitat Challenge<\/a>, which it describes as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/atoms\/files\/3d-printed.habitat.challenge.fs_.2.pdf\">a Centennial Challenges Program\ncompetition that seeks to advance additive construction technology needed to\ncreate sustainable housing solutions for Earth, the Moon, Mars and beyond.<\/a>\u201d (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/spacetech\/centennial_challenges\/index.html\">Centennial Challenges<\/a> are a set of inducement prize\ncontests hosted by NASA for achievements in technology that aren\u2019t funded by\nthe American government.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its grand final was held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/spacetech\/centennial_challenges\/3DPHab\/19-017.html\">between May 1st and May 4th 2019<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cat.com\/en_US\/support\/operations\/operator-training1\/learning-centers\/edwards.html\">Edwards Demonstration &amp; Learning Center<\/a> of Edwards, Illinois, pitting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psu.edu\">Pennsylvania State University<\/a> against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aispacefactory.com\/\">AI SpaceFactory<\/a> of New York City, New York. (AISpaceFactory is a self-proclaimed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aispacefactory.com\/about\">multi-planetary architectural and technology design agency founded to build a better future &#8211; on and beyond Earth<\/a>.\u201d) AI SpaceFactory won, receiving $500,000 in prize money, with Pennsylvania State University receiving $200,000 as the runner-up. Over the last 4 years, the challenge has seen NASA award a total of $2 million in prize money and featured more than 60 competing teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both teams were charged with 3D printing one-third scale versions of the\nshelters they had designed for previous parts of the challenge, using materials\nthat could be found on deep-space destinations like the Moon or Mars. Both subscale\nshelters were built in 3 10-hour increments via robotic construction techniques\nto keep human intervention as low as possible. They were subsequently tested\nfor structural integrity, durability, leakage and material mix, including being\nhit with a small wrecking ball and pressed under the bucket of a backhoe. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.psu.edu\/story\/574642\/2019\/05\/16\/science-and-technology\/3d-printed-mars-habitat-team-has-breakthrough\">Pennsylvania\u2019s\nshelter featured a roof that fully enclosed the structure, which they claimed\nwas something that had never been done before<\/a>. AISpaceFactory plan to\nrecycle the materials used to build their shelter to 3D print <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aispacefactory.com\/tera\">TERA<\/a>, which they described as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aispacefactory.com\/post\/ai-spacefactory-wins-1st-place-prize-for-nasa-3d-printing-habitat-challenge\">the\nfirst-ever space-tech eco habitat on Earth<\/a>;\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/projects\/tera-experience-the-future-of-living#\/\">its\ncreation was funded via a campaign on crowdfunding website Indiegogo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA\u2019s Centennial Challenges program was managed via a collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradley.edu\/challenge\/\">Bradley University<\/a> of Peoria,\nIllinois. It was administered via Bradley University collaborating with sponsors\nthat included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Construction equipment manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caterpillar.com\/\">Caterpillar<\/a> of Deerfield, Illinois, who\nalso own the Edwards Demonstration &amp; Learning Center.<\/li><li>Self-proclaimed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bechtel.com\/\">one of the most respected global engineering,\nconstruction, and project management companies<\/a>\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bechtel.com\/\">Bechtel<\/a> of Reston, Virginia. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enr.com\/toplists\/2019-Top-400-Contractors1\">As of May 2019, they\nare the most commercially successful construction company in America<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/brickmortar.vc\/\">Brick &amp;\nMortar Ventures<\/a> of San Francisco, California who describe their \u201cmission\u201d\nas \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/brickmortar.vc\/mission\">Identify, invest in, and grow\nemerging companies developing innovative software and hardware solutions for\nthe industries of architecture, engineering, construction, and facilities\nmanagement<\/a>.\u201d<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usace.army.mil\/\">The U.S.\nArmy Corps of Engineers<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA\u2019s Centennial Challenges program is part of the NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/spacetech\/home\/index.html\">Space\nTechnology Mission Directorate<\/a>, which is managed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/marshall\/home\/index.html\">NASA\u2019s Marshall\nSpace Flight Centre<\/a> of Huntsville, Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is an amazing\ntool.
