(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/thermoelectricity\">Thermo<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/thermoelectric-power-generator\">electricity<\/a> refers to the conservation of\nheat into electricity and vice-versa.) In April 2014, a group of researchers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestern.edu\/\">Northwestern University<\/a> of Evaston, Illanois discovered that tin selenide\n(SnSe) (a compound comprising tin and selenium) <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northwestern.edu\/stories\/2014\/04\/surprising-material-could-play-role-in-saving-energy\">converts heat into electricity<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature13184\">at a level unlike any other material<\/a>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/selenium\">Selenium<\/a> is a chemical element so rare it composes just 90\nparts per billion in the Earth\u2019s crust; it is mainly used in the making of\nelectronics, pigments and glass.) However, SnSe is expensive to manufacture via\nconventional means, which also need a lot of energy. The researchers at Swansea\nuniversity developed a significantly less expensive and 3D printable SnSe ink,\nas well as a 3D printing technique to make a thermoelectric device with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team\u2019s\nexperiments measured the device as having a record figure of merit (ZT). (The\nterm figure of merit can be defined as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/figure%20of%20merit\">a numerical quantity based on one\nor more characteristics of a system or device that represents a measure of\nefficiency or effectiveness<\/a>.\u201d) Their object gave a ZT value of circa 1.7; the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acsenergylett.8b00041\">previous best for a printed\nthermoelectric material was 1.0<\/a>. This represents an efficiency rate of 9.5%, compared\nwith 4.5% for the previous best. (<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/aenm.201900201\">SnSe has a ZT value of circa 2.6<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team\nhopes to have their device make electricity out of the waste heat UK industry\nproduces, particularly the steel making industry, which generates unusually\nlarge amounts of waste heat.
