{"id":1155,"date":"2019-06-28T13:19:21","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T12:19:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/?p=1155"},"modified":"2021-02-17T19:03:20","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T19:03:20","slug":"3d-printing-vs-singapores-bathrooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.3drapidprint.co.uk\/index.php\/2019\/06\/28\/3d-printing-vs-singapores-bathrooms\/","title":{"rendered":"3D Printing Vs Singapore&#8217;s Bathrooms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Here at 3D Rapid Print, one\nof the fastest growing 3D Printing companies in the Thames Valley, we like to\nkeep abreast of the latest innovations in 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late May 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntu.edu.sg\/Pages\/home.aspx\">Nanyang Technological University<\/a> (NTU) of\nSingapore unveiled what a university press release described as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/media.ntu.edu.sg\/NewsReleases\/Pages\/newsdetail.aspx?news=58273781-2a75-4f9e-966b-2d3b4b400055\">the capability to\n3D print an unfurnished bathroom in less than a day<\/a>.\u201d This had been\ndone by a multi-disciplinary group of researchers from NTU&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/sc3dp.ntu.edu.sg\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">Singapore Centre for 3D Printing<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sembcorpdc.com\/\">Sembcorp Design and Construction<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sembcorpae.com\/\">Sembcorp Architects &amp; Engineers<\/a>, including mechanical,\ncivil and material engineers, and architecture and robotics scientists. (Sembcorp\nDesign and Construction and Sembcorp Architects &amp; Engineers are subsidiaries\nof self-described \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sembcorp.com\/en\/about-sembcorp\">a\nleading energy, marine and urban development group<\/a>\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sembcorp.com\/\">Sembcorp\nIndustries<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers proclaimed that this meant\nthat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bca.gov.sg\/BuildableDesign\/pbu.html\">prefabricated\nbathroom units<\/a>\n(PBUs) could be made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CzkgNz8oxjU&amp;feature=youtu.be\">up to 30% faster\nand up to 30% lighter<\/a>\nthan current PBUs, which are usually made via concrete casting. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/ntu-team-creates-worlds-first-3d-printed-bathrooms\">Since\n2014, it has been standard practice to use PBUs in apartments that are managed\nby Singapore\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hdb.gov.sg\">Housing and\nDevelopment Board<\/a>;\nthey are manufactured elsewhere before being installed on site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team had printed and outfitted 2 PBUs:\na smaller unit that measured 1.6 x 1.5 x 2.8m and took 9 hours to print, and a\nlarger unit that measured 2 x 2.6 x 2.8m and took 12 hours to print. Five days\nwere subsequently spent furnishing the structures with sinks, mirrors,\nflooring, tiles, showers, piping, drains and a toilet. The units\u2019 walls were\nprinted in a W-lattice shape, enabling pipes and wires to be installed in the\nempty spaces within the structure, rather than via holes that would have to be\ndrilled. The researchers had been experimenting with concrete mixtures for 3D\nprinting since 2015; the mixture used had to be sufficiently fluid to properly\nflow; set fast enough for the next layer to be printed onto the previous layer;\ngive a consistent print quality, and give a structure as strong as one made via\nconventional concrete casting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of the press release, the\nlarger unit had already passed the relevant tests of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singaporestandardseshop.sg\/Product\/SSPdtDetail\/ba84e41c-f142-45f2-929e-7daa10eb14c3\">SS\n492 : 2001 (2014) Performance requirements for strength and robustness\n(including methods of test) for partition walls passed the Singaporean\nGovernment\u2019s<\/a>.\u201d (SS is short for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singaporestandardseshop.sg\/\">Singapore Standards<\/a>, which refers\nto standards for industrial activities in Singapore. Coordination of\nSingaporean industrial standards is done by the <a href=\"https:\/\/spring.enterprisesg.gov.sg\/Building-Trust\/Std\/FOR-PARTNERS\/Pages\/standards-development.aspx\">Singapore\nStandards Council<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enterprisesg.gov.sg\/quality-standards\/standards-overview\">administered<\/a>\nby governmental body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enterprisesg.gov.sg\/\">Enterprise\nSingapore<\/a>.) As of late May 2019, it is undergoing fire resistance and water\nabsorption tests, as part of the Singaporean Government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bca.gov.sg\/\">Building and Construction Authority<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bca.gov.sg\/cpc\/bip.html\">Building Innovation Panel<\/a> PBU acceptance\nframework; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/ntu-team-creates-worlds-first-3d-printed-bathrooms\">the team hope that\nthis will be finished by the end of the end of August 2019<\/a>.
