The entire world\u2019s population\ndepends on the oil and gas industry, and the high demand for oil and gas makes\nit natural for the market to want to become more efficient and more cost\neffective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energyvoice.com\/other-news\/trainingtechnology\/106937\/tech-tuesday-shell-uses-3d-printing-stones-deepwater-project-video\/\">Circa April 2016<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com\/\">Royal\nDutch Shell<\/a> of Haagse\nHout, The Netherlands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com\/inside-energy\/how-3d-printing-is-changing-the-world.html\">turned to 3D printing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energyvoice.com\/other-news\/trainingtechnology\/106937\/tech-tuesday-shell-uses-3d-printing-stones-deepwater-project-video\/\">to prototype the detachable rig used\nto connect the<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com\/about-us\/major-projects\/stones.html\">Stones project<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energyvoice.com\/other-news\/trainingtechnology\/106937\/tech-tuesday-shell-uses-3d-printing-stones-deepwater-project-video\/\">FPSO to pipelines from the\nseabed.<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oilandgasiq.com\/fpso-flng\/articles\/guide-to-floating-production-storage-and-offloading-fpso\">FPSO is short for floating\nproduction storage and offloading; it can be defined as \u201ca floating vessel that\nacts as a mobile offshore production and storage facility.\u201d)<\/a> This included making 3D printed accurate\nscale prototypes of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.us\/energy-and-innovation\/energy-from-deepwater\/shell-deep-water-portfolio-in-the-gulf-of-mexico\/stones\/_jcr_content\/par\/textimage_1458003556.stream\/1473126153647\/be222724845cc93405e132e83a97d4b2ddc46e9e\/stones-fact-sheet.pdf\">buoy that would weigh more than 3\nkilotons, measure 25m in diameter and 18m in height<\/a>, and be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meed.com\/shell-3d-printing-equipment-design\/\">kept afloat by 222 differently\nshaped blocks of foam<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energyvoice.com\/other-news\/trainingtechnology\/106937\/tech-tuesday-shell-uses-3d-printing-stones-deepwater-project-video\/\">3D printing also enabled the\nsystem to be better demonstrated to the US authorities who would have to\napprove its use.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.us\/energy-and-innovation\/energy-from-deepwater\/shell-deep-water-portfolio-in-the-gulf-of-mexico\/stones.html\">The Stones field was discovered\nin 2005 and is located in the Gulf of Mexico circa 200 miles southwest of New\nOrleans, Louisiana. The facility\u2019s pipelines stretch to almost 3km below the\nwater\u2019s surface and produce oil and gas from reservoirs almost 30,000ft below\nsea level<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.us\/media\/2016-media-releases\/stones-is-up-and-running-in-the-us-gulf-of-mexico.html\">\u201cProduction\u201d\non the Stones development began in early September 2016<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com\/about-us\/major-projects\/stones.html\">The FPSO was code-named Turritella\nand became the first FPSO to be used in the Gulf of Mexico region<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ge.com\/additive\/case-study\/ge-oil-gas-use-robotics-and-3d-printing-futuristic-talamona-plant\">In late May 2016<\/a>, it was announced that the one\nformerly known as GE Oil and Gas would start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ge.com\/additive\/case-study\/ge-oil-gas-use-robotics-and-3d-printing-futuristic-talamona-plant\">3D\nprinting end burners for gas turbine combustion chambers at its plant in\nTalamona, Italy.<\/a> (GE Oil and Gas was a subsidiary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ge.com\/\">General\nElectric Company<\/a> of\nBoston, Massachusetts. In 2017, General Electric Company merged then Baker\nHughes, now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhge.com\/\">Baker Hughes, a GE company<\/a>, of Houston, Texas.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ge.com\/additive\/case-study\/ge-oil-gas-use-robotics-and-3d-printing-futuristic-talamona-plant\">At\nthe same time, it was announced that they were also starting a fully automated\nnozzle production line, claiming these were the results of \u20ac10 million worth of\ninvestment over the last 2 years. They hoped to have new productions lines\nfully operational by the start of 2017. Their first 3D printing laboratory was\nopened in Florence, Italy in 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartechanalysis.com\/\">SmarTech Publishing<\/a> of Crozet, Virginia describe\nthemselves as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartechanalysis.com\/about-us\/\">the leading provider of market research\nand industry analysis in the 3D printing\/additive manufacturing sector<\/a>.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwired.com\/press-release\/smartech-publishing-revenue-3d-printing-from-oil-gas-industry-reach-450-million-2021-2132191.htm\">Circa June 2016,\nthey estimated\nthat the 3D printing market in the oil and gas industry would reach US $450\nmillion by 2021, growing to circa US $1.4 billion by 2025<\/a>.
