Increasing\nurbanisation and growing populations are also contributing to a significant increase\nin the financial cost of natural disasters; they cost the world <a href=\"https:\/\/borgenproject.org\/natural-disasters-increasing\/\">$528 billion<\/a> between 1981 and 1990, whereas\nthey cost just the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalance.com\/cost-of-natural-disasters-3306214\">$307 billion<\/a> in 2017 alone. Due to the low\ncosts of 3D printing technology relative to current aid efforts, it only makes\nsense that integrating 3D printing into humanitarian aid efforts will lessen\nthe financial impact of natural disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldready.org\/\">Field Ready<\/a> is non-profit organisation\nspecialising in 3D printing stuff for humanitarian aid; they worked in Nepal to\nhelp it recover from the <a href=\"https:\/\/earthquake-report.com\/2015\/04\/25\/massive-earthquake-nepal-on-april-25-2015\/\">Nepalese earthquake of April 2015<\/a>. The lack of proper road\ninfrastructure and financial resources in the village of Bhotechaur prompted Field\nReady engineer Ram\nChandra Thapa to design and produce 3D printable otoscopes; Field Ready subsequently\nexperimented with designing 3D printable tweezers, forceps and stethoscopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.millebot.com\/home\">Milleb<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.millebot.com\/home\">ot Inc<\/a> of Winter\nPark, Florida is a self-proclaimed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.millebot.com\/about-us\">privately held deep-tech company that designs and builds\na patent-pending modular digital-manufacturing platform within the ISO shipping\ncontainer<\/a>.\u201d Circa\nJanuary 2017, they unveiled a 3D printer nicknamed Mille; it combines additive\nand subtractive manufacturing, can be powered by diesel generators and is built\nwithin a shipping container to make it more practical to transport. This allows\nit to make a significant range of disaster relief items significantly faster\nthan other 3D printers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Circa\nMarch 2018, a team from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/\">Deakin University<\/a> of Victoria, Australia and humanitarian\norganisation <a href=\"https:\/\/plan-international.org\/\">Plan International<\/a> were led by <a href=\"http:\/\/invenio.deakin.edu.au\/in-their-own-words-dr-mazher-mohammed\/\">Dr. Mazer Mohammed<\/a> to the Solomon Islands. (Dr.\nMohammed is also from Deakin University.) There, they introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/amid-a-cyclone-aid-team-turns-to-3d-printers-for-rare-parts-20180304-p4z2rt.html\">solar-powered portable 3D\nprinters that can print with ground up plastic waste pellets<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given\nthat natural disasters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc.no\/news\/2017\/october\/disasters-will-displace-14-million-people-every-year\/\">displace millions of people each\nyear<\/a>, the\nmore 3D printing technology evolves, the more likely it becomes that it would\nbe used build houses in displaced communities. Housing charity <a href=\"https:\/\/newstorycharity.org\/3d-home\/\">New Story<\/a> of San-Francisco, California is on an ongoing\nmission to build 3D printed communities in area that are prone to natural\ndisasters. As of April 2019, each of their 3D printed houses costs circa $6,000\nto make and can be built within 24 hours. They collaborated with construction\ntechnologies company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iconbuild.com\/\">ICON<\/a> of Austin, Texas to develop a <a href=\"https:\/\/newstorycharity.org\/innovation\/\">3D printer to 3D print houses that was codenamed\nVulcan; it was unveiled in March 2018 at South by Southwest, also in Austin,\nTexas<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/new-story-3-d-printed-house\/\">Vulcan is made of lightweight\naluminium, making it easier to transport, and has a built-in generator in case\nof a power cut<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siliconhillsnews.com\/2019\/03\/12\/icon-unveils-a-new-large-scale-3d-printer-to-build-affordable-homes\/\">ICON unveiled a new and improved\nversion of the Vulcan circa March 2019.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iconbuild.com\/updates\/new-story-has-partnered-with-icon-to-create-the-worlds\">As of April 2019, New Story\u2019s\nwork towards its first 3D printed community is ongoing.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3D printing is an amazing tool.
